Loughmacrory advance to semi-finals
Ladies Intermediate Football Championship Quarter-Final
Loughmacrory 3-7 Badoney 2-6
Friday 14th May 2002, at Newtownstewart
Loughmacrory booked their place in this seasons Intermediate Championship
semi-finals after producing a spirited display to deny Badoney at
Newtownstewart. Despite having to endure the very difficult conditions, both
sides exhibited a great deal of resolve in what proved to be a titanic
struggle.
Badoney were quick off the mark in this contest and were two points in front
after as many minutes with Shauna Keenan and Nuala McCullagh both finding
their range. However, Loughmacrory were fortunate then to take the lead in
the fourth minute as Catherine Kelly’s speculative effort from 35 metres
sailed directly to the roof of the Badoney net. A terrific run and score
from Badoney midfielder Roisin McCullagh levelled things up at 1-0 to 0-3
and they regained the lead through a Shauna Keenan point moments later.
Seventeen minutes had gone when the Lough again squared the match as Sinead
Keenan converted a twenty metre free, following a foul on Bernie Kelly. The
2001 Junior Champions then went on to take the lead for the first time with
Catherine Kelly, Sinead Keenan and Noleen McAleer linking up in a sweeping
move and Paula McElduff providing the neat finish to make it 1-2 to 0-4.
As Loughmacrory missed a sequence of chances, Badoney stepped back into the
driving seat with Patricia Bradley finding the net. Bernie Kelly then saw
her goal attempt at the opposite end of the park rebound off the post but
she still managed a point from the rebound. A superbly taken point from
Nadine Kelly again meant the sides were deadlocked and they thus retired at
the interval on level terms, at 1-4 to 1-4.
It was Loughmacrory who quickly gained the advantage on the turn-a-round as
Bernie Kelly firstly scored a fine point and then combined with Nadine Kelly
to send Paula Kelly in for a well taken second goal. Incredibly though, the
enthralling end to end action continued and Badoney went directly upfield
with Roisin McCullagh rifling a brilliant shot to the top corner of the
Loughmacrory net.
A fine point from Badoney captain Shauna Keenan levelled the tie for a fifth
time, 2-5 to 2-5 and both sides just missed further goal chances as
Catherine Donaghy and Claire McCullagh’s respective efforts went inches
wide. Nuala McCullagh was unlucky then to see a spectacular 20 metre strike
come off the Loughmacrory crossbar but Claire McCullagh scored from the
rebound to send Badoney back in front.
In an astonishing move upfield, Orla Toner then also rattled the woodwork as
her 13 metre shot came off the crossbar before she too scored to make it 2-6
to 2-6. A pointed free on 26 minutes from Shauna Keenan was enough to edge
Badoney back into the lead but it proved to be their final score of the game
as Loughmacrory produced a most decisive late rally.
Catherine Kelly played the ball to Orla Toner and the classy midfielder sent
the ball to the roof of the Badoney net from 25 metres. It was a major blow
from which Badoney were unable to recover and Loughmacrory thus held out for
a place in the 2002 Intermediate Championship semi-finals. They will now
face competition favourites, Aghyaran, but on the evidence of this spirited
display Loughmacrory could be hard to stop.
