Daly
inspires Badoney to narrow victory …
LADIES INTERMEDIATE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP QUARTER FINAL
BADONEY 3-12
MOY 3-8
Monday 9th June, at Rock.
Badoney booked their place
in the semi-final stages of this season’s Intermediate football championship
when scoring hard fought victory over a spirited Moy side at Rock.
Ultimately it took an inspirational performance from the games outstanding
player, Briege Daly, to see them negotiate this tricky opening assignment
against last year’s junior champions. The County star produced a tremendous
scoring exhibition in terrible conditions and registered an amazing personal
tally of 1-10 from play over the hour.
Nine of those points came in a
dominant first half for Badoney and they had opened up a very commanding
1-11 to 0-1 interval lead. Moy effectively faced an impossible task from
there but the half-time introduction of Nina Murphy almost brought them back
into the game and the exciting young attacker grabbed a brace of second half
goals that saw them cut the deficit to five by the final whistle.
Briege Daly gave a very early indication
of the type of contribution she was about to deliver on the evening as she
hit a sequence of terrific points in the first quarter. A fifty metre run
and point from Daly opened the scoring on three minutes and she followed up
with another three superb points in succession from play to give her side a
0-4 to 0-0 lead by the eighth minute. Sinead McNicholl ended the sequence
with a pointed free for Moy at the opposite end of the park but moments
later the Tir na nOg’s were really facing an uphill task as Badoney
centre-back, Seana Keenan, cut through the middle and enjoyed a shade of
luck as her 30 metre strike sailed directly to the roof of the net.
Daly was again on target with
another surging fifty metre run and clinical finish from the edge of the
square before Nuala McCullagh found her range to extend Badoney’s advantage
to eight points on the quarter hour mark. Moy were now beginning to settle
that bit better but as they missed a few clear cut chances at one end,
Briege Daly made no mistake at the other end of the field as she knocked
over two fine points.
Much needed goal…
With twenty five minutes gone on
the clock, Moy were thrown a life-line when a thirty metre free-kick from
Charlene Murphy evaded the attentions of everyone in the goalmouth and
floated straight to the back of the Badoney net. However, it was Briege Daly
who was continuing to turn on the style in the approach to the break. Her
pace and accuracy were proving decisive and she raced in to bag a further
brace of points just before the interval whistle. Those scores saw Badoney
lead 1-11 to 1-1 at the break but, with Moy benefiting from the strong
upfield breeze on the resumption, the action proved much more finely
balanced.
Nina Murphy’s introduction at the
interval to the fray had an immediate impact and the substitute showed
tremendous pace to take a pass from Charlene Murphy and volley the ball to
the corner of the Badoney net after just a minute. Seana Keenan responded
with a well taken point before Nina Murphy added a Moy free to make it 1-12
to 2-2 with 35 minutes played.
Just as Moy were threatening a
major comeback though they were hit with a real blow as Briege Daly took a
pass from Ciara McElhinney and burst through the centre to unleash an
unstoppable drive to the Moy goal. That restored the ten point margin but
Moy then really gathered themselves and enjoyed a dominant spell of play
that brought five points without reply. Nina Murphy lead the revival with a
converted free-kick and then provided a well timed pass for Charlene Murphy
to score a minute later. Murphy was again at the heart of the move that led
to Moy’s next score as she combined with Colleen McCance to send Maeve
McKearney in for a neat point with fifteen minutes to go. Moy went very
close to bagging their third goal a minute later but McKearney’s shot from
close range was cleared off the line by Mary Keenan although Susan McCann
did score when collecting the rebound from 13 metres. Moy again cut through
the heart of the Badoney defence when Sally Fay and Charlene Murphy linked
up to send McKearney througthe centre and the corner forward blasted low
over the bar.
Enthralling climax...
With the score standing at 2-12 to
2-7, everything was to play for in a frantic final 8 minutes as the
conditions worsened with the incessant rain making life difficult for both
camps. However, just as Moy threatened to close the gap further, Badoney
grabbed what proved to be a match winning score. Briege Daly delivered a 13
metre strike initially but her shot was parried to safety only for Rita
Brogan to slot the ball in the corner of the net from the ricochet. Trailing
3-12 to 2-7, Moy now faced an impossible task entering the final minutes but
they did rally bravely in an attempt to salvage to proceedings. Charlene
Murphy pointed from close range and there was considerable excitement when
Nina Murphy fired home her second goal of the game entering injury time. It
was a case off too little too late at that stage however as the action
concluded with Badoney holding out to record a four point victory and claim
their place in the penultimate stage of the 2003 intermediate series.
